Farmworker Legal Services - Legal Assistant
Farmworker Legal Services (FLS) is seeking a full-time Legal Assistant to join its farmworker and immigrant rights advocacy team. FLS is committed to ensuring immigrant, migrant, and seasonal farmworkers’ equal access to economic and legal justice by providing a range of free civil legal services to farmworkers. Services include impact litigation in cases involving trafficking, wage theft, discrimination, sexual harassment, workplace health and safety violations, unsafe housing conditions, civil rights abuses, and immigration. FLS, in partnership with the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC), offers technical assistance, referrals, and intake services to farmworkers through the statewide Farmworker Law Hotline and works closely with the Immigrant Worker division of MIRC. FLS is a statewide division of the Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP), which provides access to the justice system for those who need it most.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Legal Assistant will play a key role in assisting FLS and MIRC manage a robust and busy intake system. This will include client screening and intake interviews, client database and file management, reception and telephone answering duties, drafting simple legal documents under attorney supervision, and general case/office support (typing, filing, management of office supplies, etc.). The Legal Assistant will provide administrative support for the FLS and the MIRC Kalamazoo office.
QUALIFICATIONS: Written and verbal fluency in Spanish and English are required. Qualified candidates are responsible, independent workers who take direction well and who possess excellent communication skills, as well as good computer skills, including proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications. This position requires a patient, motivated person who desires to help FLS advocates assist low income farmworker clients in resolving their legal problems. Previous experience working with farmworkers or other low-income Spanish-speaking individuals is preferred.
BENEFITS: This is a full-time unionized position with a salary starting at $33,000. The position includes excellent health, disability and fringe benefit. Kalamazoo is a college town in southwestern Michigan, located 35 miles east of Lake Michigan, and two hours from Chicago and Detroit. The Kalamazoo Promise (an independent scholarship program that provides up to four years of college tuition) is available to students who graduate from Kalamazoo Public Schools.
